First time trying out martial arts classes?

Here’s some information that may help you prepare for your first Jujitsu class:

  1. Wear clothes you can move around in and that are comfortable. You want to make sure you aren’t wearing anything that can restrict movement.
  2. Bring a water bottle (hydration is important!).
  3. Wear shoes that are easy to put on and take off! We are barefoot on the mat so its often easier to wear thongs when walking around the dojo.
  4. Please make sure to remove any jewellery or piercings to avoid injury.

What should I expect from a martial arts class?

Our jujitsu style involves many aspects of self defence, control and restraint techniques and sports jujitsu aspects such as grappling, throws and sparring. We go through many techniques and scenarios a night however when you are starting you are never expected to remember or master them. You will train at your own pace and practise martial arts techniques that are suited to your age, mobility and ability levels.

In the adult classes, you can expect to learn practical self defence, control and restraints techniques such as wrist-locks, arm locks, leg locks, finger locks, face locks; basically if you have a limb or a body part we are going to teach you how to lock it up and try and bend it in a way it doesn’t usually bend. You can also expect to learn grappling, sparring drills and randori (throwing practise).

In the Junior and Sub-Junior jujitsu classes, you can expect to do all the same things the adult classes just suited to the size and skill of our little people. We make sure the self defence is applicable to their size and their knowledge. As the kids become more involved with Jujitsu they learn to put locks and holds on others. This is a great way of teaching them the limits of other, their body and learning to respect the tap; because it not only protects others but themselves.  We also love getting the kids to practise ground fighting and randori each lesson. This is a great outlet for kids to get their slightly rougher side out in a safe, controlled environment with rules to keep them safe and enjoy the experience of the sport side of Jujitsu.
